Further benefits from the Frankfurt data platform for citizens

In October 2022, the Urban Data Platform (UDP) went online, where various information such as environmental and traffic data is visualized and processed via dashboards and map views. Until now, citizens could conveniently find the nearest e-charging station with detailed information on connection type and occupancy status as well as information on air quality and the corresponding behavioral recommendations of the Federal Environment Agency, view the typical traffic volume of a weekday in Frankfurt and submit ideas for further use cases for the UDP at urbane-datenplattform.frankfurt.de kNow, information on current pedestrian volumes in eight Frankfurt shopping streets will also be viewable there.

Councillor Eileen O'Sullivan, the department head responsible for digitalization, says: "From now on, citizens can see exactly how busy Frankfurt's popular shopping streets are at any given time via a corresponding graph on the Urban Data Platform.
When classifying the values, it helps to compare them with the long-term average value for the respective weekday at the same time of day. This makes it easy for anyone to see at short notice whether the planned shopping trip on Saturday afternoon on the so-called Zeil is likely to be busier or less busy than usual. This means that the shopping trip can be planned better than before. And for citizens' initiatives or parties distributing information stands or flyers, the comparative values can also be a help in being able to plan well when many people can be found on the shopping streets."

City Councilor Stephanie Wüst, the department head responsible for economic development, adds: "The frequency of passers-by is one of the most important key figures for assessing the attractiveness of our city center and district shopping streets. For several years, the Economic Development Department has been evaluating how visitor flows develop and when people move around in our city. The fact that this data is now available in almost real-time is gratifying. Businesses can use it, for example, to compare the current number of visitors to their street and their store. This allows them to draw conclusions that the aggregated data material did not previously provide."

About the use case of pedestrian traffic

UrbanPulse Cockpit Frankfurt usecaseThe new use case can be used to determine how many people move through certain shopping streets in the city within a period of time. The values collected every hour are the number of people who passed the respective measuring point within one hour.

In addition, the long-term averages enable a comparison with the average pedestrian volumes in the past, in relation to the respective day of the week and the corresponding hourly time window, for example Saturday 2 to 3 p.m..

The timeline and shopping street can be customized in the dashboard as well as in the map view.
